What is “Shining Moon”?

Shining Moon is a Sailor Moon theatrical and musical experience in a more intimate setting than the traditional stage performances. Not only can the audience see the actresses up close and interact with them, but also food, photo ops and themed drinks help create a more magical immersive experience. This is an introduction to this new entertainment concept and will cover very general information for those who are not familiar with Shining Moon.

✦ Shining Moon Tokyo ✦

(2019 – 2020)

The Shining Moon Tokyo musical was first opened in mid 2019. Up until then, there had been no permanent shows or cafes for the Sailor Moon franchise, only a string of temporary pop-ups and short-run musicals. SMT was created as a new, permanent hub and destination for both Japanese and international fans to gravitate to,

The show was performed in small venue with a limited amount of tables and chairs facing an equally small stage. Guests were able to enjoy themed food and drinks, and take home exclusive merch. On stage, all 5 Inner Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask would sing and dance to a few songs, fight Queen Beryl and her lackeys and tell a very simple story in a short amount of time.

Walls inside the restaurant were decorated with replicas of the costumes worn by the actresses and there were many photo opportunities spread around. The location of this theater was also very strategic, right in the heart of Azabu-Juban (the district in Tokyo where the series takes place) so fans could feel they are part of the story.

Unfortunately, SMT was permanently shut down in the beginning of 2020 because of COVID-19.

✦ Reborn in 2026! ✦

Six years after the closure of Shining Moon Tokyo, a second version of this musical/cafe was created to recapture the spirit of the first show and once again create a thriving pilgrimage site for all Moonies to visit. The Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo venue is now located in Club eX, inside the Shingawa Prince Hotel complex in Tokyo. This complex offers a wide variety of entertainment options such as cinemas, theaters, restaurants, etc.

Inside, the space is small and intimate. This time around, they have done away with dining, but they do offer themed drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), as well as a small take-away cake for certain tickets tiers, a wonderful shopping spot and many photo-ops throughout the halls.

The show itself also got an upgrade! The stage is bigger with an enormous LED screen that acts as backdrop, we got a totally new story with new music, and we finally have ALL 10 Sailor Guardians, Tuxedo Mask on stage! There are also even more opportunities to interact with the actresses, making for a unique, fun and unforgettable experience for new and old(er) fans.

New Story, New Villain.

This show will have a brand new story, one we haven’t seen as Sailor Moon fans. They are introducing a new character, “Queen Valusia” who is the new enemy to Sailor Moon and her team. Here is the official story summary:

Humanity… or AI…? In the search for true love, the battle of Sailor Guardians begins.

Usagi and her friends visit a new AI-themed park in Tokyo and are thrilled by the technology that creates a world where everything is perfect. However, standing before them is an otherworldly queen: Queen Valusia.

Using this perfect world created by AI, Queen Valusia gradually steals away Usagi’s heart. She also places curses on Mamoru, Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako in an attempt to claim this world for herself.

Chibi Usa, Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru sense this danger and come to aid their friends. The overwhelming power of Queen Valusia and her control of this AI world, is too much for them and they are struck down one by one.

“Usagi…! Wake up, Usagi…!!” – Will the feelings of her friends reach Usagi, whose heart has been taken away!?

A cast of fresh faces (except for a few returning actresses) performs as the Sailor Guardians, and Tuxedo Mask, set in a contemporary technological adventure created just for this show!

Two Teams.

The performing (and greeting) cast consists of two teams: “Team Gold Moon” and “Team Silver Moon” with each character played by two different actresses.

The production, music and costumes have been created specifically for the type of performance required by the configuration of this theater.

The Sailor Moon Shining Theater has moved to a brand new venue, called Club eX, located at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel on the 3rd floor of Annex Tower. It can seat 450 people.

Fun fact: The Shinagawa Prince Hotel was also host to the Sailor Moon Music Festival: Chronicle in late 2022 (event review HERE) at the Stella Ball theater. The Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo Shinagawa is also at the same complex, but now at the recently renewed Club eX venue.

Drink Information
