✦ The Interview ✦

“Sailor Moon -Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo-” where you can enjoy the world of the popular manga “Sailor Moon” opened in April 2026, with the second season kicked off in August 2026. For this new season, a few songs were added to the “live” part of the musical, a special performance called “Kids’ Theater Day” was added, and the “Cheering performances” have also begun. Many customers from Japan as well as abroad are seeing the musical.

Immediately after the start of the second season, Hiroyuki Tomioka from Confetti magazine interviewed Rina Koyama (Team Gold Moon) and Yuna Yamaguchi (Team Silver Moon), who play the role of Super Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino.

– Tomioka: First off, what are your current feelings?

✦ Koyama: “It started back in April, and for me, the biggest surprise was thinking, “Wait, the first season is over and we’re already onto the second?” Since rehearsals alone took about two months, it feels like I’ve been involved for half a year; it’s been a long time, yet it also feels like it flew by in a flash.”

✦ Yamaguchi: “Honestly, it feels like the time just flew by, yet when I look back and reflect on everything that happened, I also feel like it was actually a long journey. Still, I never imagined so many people would come to see the show. I’m truly grateful for that and it feels like I’ve made it this far by simply enjoying every single performance.”

– Tomioka: From the presentation of a new original story to the audience-friendly policy allowing photography during live segments, cast meet-and-greets, and the exceptional quality of the character portrayals, the production generated a massive buzz on social media, right from its opening night.

✦ Koyama: “I never expected such a tremendous response, so I am absolutely delighted. It gives us a real boost of energy and we are deeply grateful to see so many new and returning fans attending the performances and sharing videos of their favorite characters on social media.”

✦ Yamaguchi: “It was my first time performing in a long-running production, and I faced the challenge of delivering the exact same performance every single time. While I was incredibly grateful that the show generated buzz right from the start, that very attention brought immense pressure and nervousness, along with the fear of letting people down and failing to live up to their expectations.”

– Tomioka: What memorable events occurred during the run of the show? (both actors shared personal memories involving the cast).

✦ Koyama: “Even in everyday life, I naturally follow Sailor Moon. I often go out with Anri (Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru) and Nakamura Marin (Super Sailor Chibi Moon/Chibiusa), and the other day the three of us stopped by the Sailor Moon store in Harajuku and bought some goods for each of us. It’s so cute that I can’t help but want to collect it.”

✦ Yamaguchi: I spend about half of my days off with Riku Akagi (Super Sailor Mars/Rei Hino). Just the other day, we went to the Sailor Moon Store and bought some random pin badges. Riku pulled the Sailor Moon one and handed it to me, saying, “Here you go!” I had been trying to get Sailor Mars, but I didn’t end up getting her (laughs). We’ve been talking about going back again sometime.”

– Tomioka: Apparently, as the merchandise has gradually accumulated, the dressing room has become filled with it.

✦ Yamaguchi: “Team Silver Moon brought goods to the Hibiya event (HIBIYA LIVE FESTIVAL 2026) which I always carry with me along with my makeup.”

✦ Koyama: “We work in a two-team rotation, so on the last day of each week, we have to pack away the merchandise we’ve set up and reset the display; however, since the amount of merch keeps growing day by day, the time it takes to tidy up is gradually getting longer, too (laughs).”

– Tomioka: Entering the second season, what areas have been improved compared to the opening?

✦ Yamaguchi: “It’s my first time playing an energetic character like Usagi. In my personal life, I’m actually shy and not the type to wear my emotions on my sleeve. However, after I was cast, my family whom I hadn’t seen in about six months, remarked on how much more cheerful I had become. It made me realize once again how Sailor Moon changed me. Usagi is the kind of girl who brings happiness just by being there, and I feel like she taught me the kind of person I want to be.”

✦ Koyama: “I had been trying to internalize the character of Usagi right from the rehearsal stage, but as we’ve gone through more performances, I feel like she has truly become a part of me, allowing me to connect more deeply with the role. Since this is my first time playing such an energetic character, I want to keep growing by experimenting with different acting nuances and learning as I search for the right approach.”

– Tomioka: I asked about the highlights of the second season.

✦ Yamaguchi: “During the live performance segments, the cast frequently comes down into the audience area, and the Guardians dancing on stage perform in pairs featuring combinations you wouldn’t normally see, so I think the audience will really enjoy that aspect. There are also plenty of special events, such as the “Valusia Code” seeing guests off after the show, so I would be delighted if you could come and see it at least once.”

✦ Koyama: “The second season is bigger and better than ever; a major highlight is the live performance segment, which has expanded from three to four songs, two of which are brand new.”

– Tomioka: The duo handles a grueling schedule performing twice on weekdays (including public holidays) and three times on weekends. When asked what they focus on to maintain their performance quality, they gave contrasting answers.

✦ Koyama: “My hobby is exercising daily, and I’ve been doing muscle training since high school. I do aerobic exercise and muscle training to maintain a body that doesn’t get tired easily. Not only on days off, but also on performance days too, I make sure to exercise before going backstage. As you warm up, you’ll be able to speak louder.”

✦ Yamaguchi: “I’m the type of person who really needs sleep; during performance intermissions, I sleep so much that people around me often say, “Every time I look at you, you’re asleep.” I usually finish my makeup early so I can just relax (laughs). Also, I walk a lot in my daily life, so getting around on foot might actually serve as a warm-up for me.”

– Tomioka: Finally, we received a message for those looking forward to the performance.

✦ Yamaguchi: “This is a production we could never create on our own, it only exists because there are people like you watching it. We will continue to give it our all to convey the emotions we feel in the moment directly to you, so I hope you fully immerse yourselves in and enjoy the world of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.”

✦ Koyama: “The production is incredibly lavish, so I’m sure you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the world of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the moment you step into the theater. Since live theater is a unique, living experience—and the cast’s expressions will likely vary from day to day—I hope you’ll enjoy those nuances as well.”
